In my third year of college I moved to Montana State University where I was introduced to ceramics by Frances Senska. She is considered one of the pioneer Montana Modernist Artists from the 50's and 60's. After studing with her for one year, I moved back to California and enrolled at the Santa Barbara Art Institute to study art full time for three more years. It was during this time, I was introduced to Paul Soldner's Raku. After graduating I worked as a production potter for five years. I also had my own stud io and built a large stand in Downdraft kiln. In 1979 I walked away from everything.....
In 2008 I moved back to Montana. In 2017 I came back to ceramics, producing High fired porcelain dinnerware and Raku art pieces.
In making my handmade porcelain dinnerware, I throw and trim each piece as thin as possible, so the walls are almost paper thin to 1/8 inch thick. As they are fired to a high temperature the thinness can cause the piece to be distorted slightly. Giving the piece, in my opinion, a natural, organic, (wabi-sabi) feel to it. Each piece is hand glazed with glazes I have produced from scratch. The glaze process is done with specific techniques, depending on what effect I want to produce. The piece is then fired to a high temperature over 2300 degrees F. So, you know it is oven safe. At this temperature the clay turns almost liquid like glass. Then is cooled for 24 hours. When it comes out of the kiln you can tap the porcelain piece, and it will sing to you. It will ring like a crystal goblet. Giving you the sense of its quality.
